Maker: Badikupa Gurruwiwi
Clan: Gälpu
Area: Galiwin’ku
Key: C fundamental/F overtone
Length: --
Mouthpiece: --
Bell: --
Price: $475
Description: Typical of Badikupa’s instruments, this yidaki is reminiscent of some heard on the old ethnographic field recordings- dirty and slightly muffled, with a flattish rhythmic response in an acoustic profile that really grows on you once you settle into the moderate backpressure (as is expected with an instrument of this key). A straightforward and understated instrument with a strong baritone voice, it is adorned in acrylic with Badikupa's trademark artwork representing his Gälpu clan's connection to Wititj the olive python, and the associated thunder, rain, lightning and rainbow - all of which in turn is connected to the origin and power of yidaki for these Dhuwa people.

Maker: Mirarra’ Burarrwanga
Clan: Gumatj
Area: Biranybirany, Arnhem Land
Key: F# fundamental/G overtone
Length: --
Mouthpiece: --
Bell: --
Price: $550
Description: Fast and feisty, this little yidaki is a ripper! Mirarra’s work reflects the time that he has spent learning from Djalu’- but his instruments have a flavor distinctly of their own. Full-bodied traditional acoustics with plenty of dirt and grit and a lovely natural bore from a perfectly sized mouthpiece and tight throat down to a nicely sized bell, this yidaki is truly a racehorse and wants to be played with strong aggressive tonguing and rewards the player with sharp cracking accents and popping overtones.

Maker: Joe Watson (Latitj Naromi)
Clan: Gurrgoni
Area: Maningrida, Arnhem Land
Key: F# fundamental
Length: --
Mouthpiece: --
Bell: --
Price: $500
Description: A warm sounding mago with a smooth, velvety voice owing to the open and clear bore that still retains an interesting topography. Incredibly responsive to tongued glides and vocal hums, this little gem rewards the player with a rich sound with plenty of snarl and snap in the lilting rhythmic patterning for which it was fashioned. An experienced dancer with White Cockatoo Group, Joe Watson has latent talent as a mago maker as well! The upper section of this instrument is adorned with Joe’s white ochre handprints and water lilies adorn the lower section, all on a red ochre base.

Maker: Russel Brian
Clan: Rembarrnga
Area: Maningrida, Arnhem Land
Key: F#-G fundamental
Length: --
Mouthpiece: --
Bell: --
Price: $700
Description: Gruff throaty acoustics with a slightly compressed feel, this little mago is a feral brute. A completely natural bore not unlike a cavern with convolutions and cragginess to spare kicks out plenty of punch with a healthy bassiness.. Vocal response is second to none- a powerful little player with an attitude!

Maker: Ambrose Cameron
Clan: Rembarrnga
Area: Malnyanganak, Arnhem Land
Key: E fundamental
Length: --
Mouthpiece: --
Bell: --
Price:: $850
Description: A classic flared mago with a gentle sweeping curve from the late Ambrose Cameron. Throaty acoustics coming from a completely natural bore with all the cragginess one would expect Somewhat unusual for mago, this instrument has a raw mouthpiece- not needing the sugarbag wax typically found on instruments from this region. Note the wear use patination on the upper section- it has seen some use locally in Arnhem Land prior to its final collection here. This sort of instrument appeals to me most- as it shows value by Arnhem Landers as an instrument made for use within the community rather than simply for sale. Decorated with Ambrose’s handprints in white and yellow ochre on a red ochre base.
